Understanding sales tax
What this calculator does
This calculator handles two common sales tax problems. “Add tax” starts from a pre-tax price and calculates the tax owed plus the total you will pay. “Remove tax” starts from a tax-inclusive amount — such as a receipt total — and works backwards to find the original price before tax was applied. Both modes accept any tax rate, including fractional rates like 8.25% or 6.875%.
Formulas
Add tax — find the total
total = price + tax
Remove tax — find the pre-tax price
tax = total − pre-tax price
How to use it
- Select Add tax if you know the pre-tax price, or Remove tax if you know the final total.
- Enter the price or total in the first field.
- Enter the tax rate as a percentage (e.g.
8.25for 8.25%). - Click Calculate to see the tax amount and result.
Examples
- Add tax: $80.00 item at 8.25% sales tax
Tax = 80 × 0.0825 = $6.60 • Total = $86.60 - Remove tax: $86.60 receipt total at 8.25%
Pre-tax = 86.60 ÷ 1.0825 = $80.00 • Tax = $6.60
Assumptions and limitations
- This calculator applies a single flat rate. It does not model tiered rates, tax caps, or maximum taxable amounts.
- Exemptions are not applied automatically. Groceries, prescription drugs, and other exempt goods vary by jurisdiction — enter 0% for exempt items.
- The tax rate you enter should be the combined rate for your jurisdiction (state + county + city), which you must look up separately.
- Results are displayed to two decimal places (cent precision). Actual tax collected may be subject to rounding rules that vary by state.
- This tool is for estimation only. Always verify the applicable rate and any exemptions with your state or local revenue authority.
