How to use the hours and minutes calculator

How to add hours and minutes

Select the Add / Subtract mode. Make sure the toggle button shows +. Enter the first duration in the top row and the second in the bottom row, then click Calculate.

Example: 2 hours 45 minutes + 1 hour 30 minutes = 4h 15m (4.25 decimal hours, 255 total minutes, 15,300 seconds).

The calculator adds the total minutes of both durations and converts to hours and minutes: (2 × 60 + 45) + (1 × 60 + 30) = 165 + 90 = 255 minutes = 4h 15m.

How to subtract hours and minutes

In the Add / Subtract mode, click the + button to switch it to . The second duration is then subtracted from the first.

Example: 7 hours 50 minutes − 2 hours 15 minutes = 5h 35m.

If the second duration exceeds the first, the result is negative — for example, 2 hours 15 minutes − 7 hours 50 minutes = −5h 35m (−5.58 decimal hours, −335 total minutes, −20,100 seconds). The minus sign is shown consistently on all output formats.

How to convert minutes to hours and minutes

Select Min → H:M, enter the total number of minutes, and click Calculate. The result shows hours and minutes, decimal hours, confirmed total minutes, and total seconds.

Example: 135 minutes = 2h 15m (2.25 hours, 8,100 seconds). Formula: hours = floor(135 ÷ 60) = 2, remaining minutes = 135 mod 60 = 15.

How to convert decimal hours to hours and minutes

Select Decimal → H:M, enter the decimal value, and click Calculate. Common values: 0.25 = 15 min, 0.5 = 30 min, 0.75 = 45 min.

Example: 4.75 hours = 4h 45m (285 minutes, 17,100 seconds). Formula: hours = floor(4.75) = 4, minutes = round(0.75 × 60) = 45.

How to convert hours and minutes to decimal hours

Select H:M → Decimal, enter hours and minutes (0–59), and click Calculate. Decimal hours are used in payroll, billing, and time-tracking systems because they can be multiplied directly by an hourly rate.

Example: 2 hours 30 minutes = 2.50 decimal hours (150 minutes, 9,000 seconds). Formula: (2 × 60 + 30) ÷ 60 = 150 ÷ 60 = 2.5.

Hours and minutes worked — using this calculator for time tracking

This calculator is useful for totaling hours and minutes worked across two periods without a payroll system. Enter the first session in the top fields and the second in the bottom fields, then click Calculate. The result shows the combined duration in H:M format, decimal hours, total minutes, and total seconds.

For payroll purposes, use the decimal hours result. Multiply decimal hours by your hourly rate to get the total amount. For example, 6.75 hours × $20/hr = $135. This calculator does not compute wages, salaries, or any monetary amounts.

For adding more than two time entries, use the Time Addition Calculator, which supports unlimited rows.

How this differs from the Hours Calculator

The Hours Calculator works with clock times — it calculates elapsed hours between a start time and an end time (e.g. 08:30 to 17:00), handles breaks, converts a single duration to decimal, or finds what time it will be after adding hours to a start time.

The Hours and Minutes Calculator works with standalone durations — no clock times, no start or end times. It adds, subtracts, or converts abstract H:M values. Use the Hours Calculator for clock-time questions; use this calculator for duration arithmetic and unit conversion.

How this differs from the Time Addition Calculator

The Time Addition Calculator supports unlimited rows of durations including seconds, with a separate + or − sign per row. Use it for batch totals of three or more durations, video timecodes, or any workflow requiring seconds precision.

This calculator handles one two-value add or subtract operation, without seconds, plus four conversion modes. It is faster for single-step tasks.
