Time Addition Calculator
Use this time adder to add or subtract multiple time durations in hours, minutes, and seconds. Enter each duration as a separate row, set each row's sign to + or −, and click Calculate. Use it to total video segment lengths, task durations, workout splits, and study sessions. The result is displayed in compact form, HH:MM:SS, decimal hours, total minutes, and total seconds.

How to use the time adder
Enter your durations
Each row represents one duration. Enter hours, minutes, and seconds in the corresponding fields. Click the + or − button on any row to set whether it adds to or subtracts from the total. Rows with 0h 0m 0s are skipped automatically. Click Add row to include more durations, or Clear all to reset to the default example.
Seconds, minutes, and hours — how normalization works
This time addition calculator normalizes all results automatically. No output will ever show more than 59 minutes or 59 seconds in its respective component:
- 60 seconds → 1 minute (seconds carry into minutes)
- 60 minutes → 1 hour (minutes carry into hours)
- 4 hours 90 minutes → 5 hours 30 minutes
- 0 hours 0 minutes 90 seconds → 1 minute 30 seconds
The HH:MM:SS output uses zero-padded minutes and seconds (e.g. 5:00:00 or 1:05:30). The compact output omits zero-value trailing units (e.g. 5h rather than 5h 00m 00s).
Examples
- Video segments: 0h 12m 30s + 0h 45m 10s + 1h 3m 20s = 2h 01m (2:01:00 in HH:MM:SS)
- Default example: 1h 25m + 2h 40m + 0h 55m = 5h (5:00:00 in HH:MM:SS, 5.00 decimal hours, 300 total minutes)
- Mixed add/subtract: +2h 30m, +1h 15m, −45m = 3h
- Seconds carry: 0h 59m 45s + 0h 0m 30s = 1h 15s
- Task log: 1h 20m + 45m + 2h 10m = 4h 15m
Negative results
When subtract rows exceed add rows, the result is negative. For example, +30m − 1h = −30 minutes. The primary result card shows Net time instead of Total time, and the value is prefixed with a minus sign (e.g. −30m or −1h 30m). This is a valid result — it means more time was subtracted than added.
How this differs from related calculators
- Hours Calculator (Add hours mode) — supports hours and minutes only, all rows add. Use this calculator instead when you need seconds or mixed + / − rows.
- Time Duration Calculator — calculates elapsed time between two clock times (e.g. 9:15 AM to 5:30 PM). This adding time calculator takes standalone duration values with no reference to a clock start or end time.
- Hours and Minutes Calculator — simple two-value arithmetic. Use this time addition calculator for batch totals of three or more durations.
- Minutes to Hours Calculator — converts a single minutes value to hours. This adding hours calculator handles multiple rows with seconds.
Supported output formats
- Compact: Natural reading order — 5h, 4h 15m, 1h 05m 30s, 30m, 45s
- HH:MM:SS: Zero-padded colon notation — 5:00:00, 4:15:00, 0:30:00
- Decimal hours: Single number for billing and payroll systems — 5.00, 4.25, 0.50
- Total minutes and total seconds: Plain integer totals — 300 minutes, 18,000 seconds
